Tunde Bakare: Emi lo kan Politics fosters dictatorship; effective politicians engage in debate

0

Politicians that engage in “emi lo kan” politics, according to Citadel Global Community Church serving overseer Tunde Bakare, do not seek to serve the people.

On Sunday, Bakare gave a speech during a state of the country address that was given in the Ikeja, Lagos, church auditorium.

“Bridging The Gap Between Politics & Governance” was the title of the broadcast.

Speaking on the next elections, Bakare urged Nigerians to avoid vote-buying and put their attention on politics that can advance progress.

Highlighting evil types of politics, the cleric cited politics of division, deception, manipulation, commerce, exploitation, treachery, slander, intimidation, elimination, and entitlement.

Speaking on the politics of entitlement, Bakare noted that this style of politics is also referred to as “emi lo kan” politics since it serves to gratify individual ambitions.

Although the preacher did not mention Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, the former governor of Lagos is credited with popularizing the expression “emi lo kan.”

It could also take the form of a person’s insistence on holding a certain political position as compensation for what they see as a lifetime of service to the country.

Politicians that have a strong feeling of entitlement avoid political disputes and don’t think it’s important to interact with the public.

“Entitlement politics will produce an imperial administration that is cut off from the populace and devoid of any sense of accountability to them. Such imperial rule will become repressive of opposition and veer toward dictatorship.

“When they gain power, entitlement politicians set low performance standards for themselves and are ready to portray molehills as mountains of accomplishment. All of that is horrible, including the politics and the results.

“When they gain power, entitlement politicians set low performance standards for themselves and are ready to portray molehills as mountains of accomplishment. That is poor fruit, terrible politics, and The cleric continued by saying that politicians who follow ethical political practices engage with the populace and do not shun discussions or defer to others when answering inquiries.

The key to good politics is communication. Good politicians engage in conversation with the electorate they hope to represent, he added. it’s entirety

“They reassure the populace, assuage worries, and restore hope through communication.

“It is interactive and engaging; those who engage in good politics are not afraid to discuss or answer challenging issues. They don’t even ask others to answer their queries on their behalf.

In December 2022, Tinubu requested that some members of his staff, notably the speaker of the house of representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the governor of Kaduna, Nasir el-Rufai, respond to inquiries on his behalf at the Chatham House in the United Kingdom.

Nigerians responded to Tinubu’s conduct on social media, questioning his choice to not respond to all of the inquiries.

Additionally, the APC candidate has stayed out of the presidential debates.

In contrast, Tinubu won the APC presidential primary in June 2022 with zero votes from Bakare and other contenders like Rochas Okorocha, Ikeobasi Mokelu, and Tein Jack-Rich.

FG to review Minimum Wage

0

According to the National Salaries Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), a process for reviewing the National Minimum Wage has been started.

This was stated in a statement made on Sunday in Abuja by Mr. Emmanuel Njoku, the NSIWC’s Head of Public Affairs.
Njoku stated that the commission has undertaken a series of meetings and training in preparation for a countrywide monitoring of the Minimum Wage Act 2019 as part of the process to review the minimum wage, which would be required in 2024.

He said that the monitoring, which was scheduled to start on January 23, would determine the degree of compliance of both public and private enterprises and organizations.
He claims that the monitoring team would, among other things, look into whether firms maintain proper records of employee pay and working conditions.

In his statement, he said “The exercise will enlighten the public and private employers and organizations on the economic benefits in adhering to the payment of the National Minimum Wage.

“It will also help in obtaining baseline data on remuneration policies and practices of private sector organizations in order to enrich the commission’s data bank on staff compensation. “The monitoring exercise will cover the 36 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory,”

Njoku stated that the Ministry of Labour and Employment, as well as the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, will be represented on the monitoring team for the exercise.

He lists the National Bureau of Statistics, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Budget Office of the Federation, and Head of Service of the Federation as other stakeholders.

The spokesman urged all branches of the federal, state, and municipal governments—as well as government-owned companies, businesses in the private sector, and labor unions—to work with the monitoring officers.

Plane crashes in Nepal, leaves dozens dead and injured.

A plane carrying 72 people crashed close to an airport in the heart of Nepal, killing dozens of people.

From Kathmandu to the popular tourist destination of Pokhara, the Yeti Airlines aeroplane crashed upon landing before catching fire.

Social media videos depict an aeroplane passing closely above a crowded area before abruptly banking.

Officials reported that at least 68 deaths had been officially confirmed. Unconfirmed sources said that some seriously injured survivors were transferred to hospitals. With 68 passengers, including at least 15 foreign nationals, and four crew members, the aeroplane took off. 53 of the travellers are reportedly from Nepal. On the plane, there were two Koreans, five Russians, and five Indians. In addition, there was one traveller from each of Ireland, Australia, Argentina, and France.

The 15-year-old twin-engine ATR 72 ceased broadcasting location data at 05:05 GMT, and the last signal from the aircraft was received at 05:12, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24.

The effort at the accident site in the Seti canyon, approximately 1.5 kilometres from the airport, attracted hundreds of Nepalese soldiers.

According to authorities, the search effort has been halted for the day.

The plane’s crash site was captured on video with flaming wreckage and dense, billowing black smoke.

In order to expedite rescue efforts, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal convened an emergency meeting of his cabinet. A commission has been assembled to look into what caused the crash.

Meet the latest Miss Universe

0

On Saturday night, R’Bonney Gabriel of the United States was named the 71st Miss Universe.

Amanda Dudamel from Venezuela and Andrena Martnez from the Dominican Republic lost out to Gabriel, who last year made history by becoming the first Filipino-American to win Miss USA.

In New Orleans, Louisiana, 84 ladies from around the world competed for the title in the pageant.

The tournament ended on Saturday night, with eliminations reducing the number of competitors until only the final two remained.

“Miss Universe recently made an inclusive change allowing mothers and married women to participate this year,” she was asked when Gabriel reached the Top 5. What other modification would you like to see and why?

In her response, Gabriel expressed her desire for the contest’s age restrictions to be raised.

The Top 3 contestants were questioned on how, if they won the crown, they would work to promote Miss Universe as an empowering and progressive organization during the competition’s final question and answer session.
By reducing pollution and using recycled materials in the creation of garments, Gabriel stressed her desire to be a “transformational leader” and a force for good in the fashion business.

“I give sewing lessons to women who have escaped domestic abuse and human trafficking. And I say that because it’s crucial to support others, support our community, and use your special talent to change the world, added Gabriel.

Given that I am 28 years old, I would like to see a rise in age. The oldest age to compete is that one. And I consider it to be lovely. If not now, when? is one of my favorite quotations. Because I feel that age does not determine who we are as women. It’s not tomorrow or yesterday; it’s now this second. The moment has come, she declared.

Gabriel, a model, fashion designer, and sewing instructor from Houston, places a high value on the environment.

Earlier in the pageant, Gabriel wore a red-orange cape that she had coloured herself and was designed to seem like a phoenix rising, with the phrase “if not now, then when.” Her father’s counsel to act on one’s ambitions, dreams, and desires served as the basis for the words.

After businesswoman and champion for transgender rights Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip purchased the Miss Universe Organization for $20 million in October, JKN Global Group PCL, a media distribution firm with headquarters in Thailand, conducted the competition for the first time this year.

Jakkaphong, the first female owner of the pageant, has been outspoken about her experiences as a transgender woman.
She appeared on stage to commemorate Thailand’s Anna Sueangam-iams devotion to social justice by presenting her with the ImpactWayv Challenge winner.

A testament to her humble roots and her parents’ jobs as garbage collectors, Miss Thailand made headlines during the preliminary rounds of the contest in an attire constructed of soda tabs.

19 dies, thousands ordered to leave their home as deadly storm drenches California

0

At least 19 people have died as a result of flooding in many waterways, and thousands more people have been ordered to leave their homes.

Locals in the village of Montecito, which is 135 miles (84 km) northwest of Los Angeles, said that the rain makes their trauma worse.

Many are concerned that a mudslide that killed 23 people here in 2018 may happen again.

Wildfires, drought, and the possibility of earthquakes are all things that Californians are accustomed to, and many are still waiting for the “Big One” that so many experts forecast. But California is seeing a brand-new “storm parade.”

These storms, which started in late December, have claimed at least 19 lives. In fast-moving floodwater in central California, a five-year-old kid was torn from his mother’s arms after they became caught while travelling to school. He is still missing.

Vineyards in Northern California are submerged. Capitola’s historic dock was demolished, and the seaside town was severely damaged. The river is rising in the illustrious Salinas Valley, endangering California’s renowned agricultural region.

Federal assistance for the counties of Sacramento, Merced, and Santa Cruz has now been ordered by US President Joe Biden.

The problem with having so many powerful storms close together, according to NASA climate scientist Kimberley Rain Miner, is that the ground is already saturated and cannot absorb the water that is dropping swiftly.

Everyone in California is glued to their phones, waiting to learn whether they should leave town and wondering where they may be able to go safely if they do.

Breaking: The deputy speaker of Kaduna state and another lawmaker defect to the Labour Party

0

Isaac Auta Zankai, the deputy speaker of the Kaduna state assembly, and Suleiman Dabo, another member of the Zaria state constituency, have defected from the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labor Party (LP).

Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the national secretary of the Labour Party and the head of the state governorship council, said this on Thursday in Kaduna, during the inauguration of the 450-member governorship campaign council of the party and the release of its platform.

Ibrahim noted that the support the party was receiving from the caliber of personalities in the state was a sign that the party was on the march to capturing political power both in the state and at the national levels in the upcoming general elections. He claimed that half of the state House of Assembly members were “Obi-Datti” apostles.

Sincerely speaking, this is one of my happiest days ever, he remarked. In my travels to spread the word about Peter Obi, our presidential candidate, I have been well-received.

“The caliber of personalities that attended this inauguration truly impressed me. Except for the Deputy Speaker and another member from the Zaria state seat in Kaduna State, none of the personalities in the northern states have left the APC for the Labor Party.
