The National Universities Commission announced on Friday that Nigeria’s total number of universities has reached 264. This figure includes universities owned by the federal and state governments, as well as those owned by private individuals and corporations.

During a ceremony in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, presented provisional licenses to some newly established private universities. Rasheed acknowledged the significant demand for tertiary education in the country but highlighted the insufficient number of institutions available to meet this demand.

Rasheed also emphasized to the proprietors of the newly established universities that their primary motivation should not be financial gain but rather a higher and more noble purpose. He stated that the establishment of universities should be driven by a desire to contribute to humanity rather than solely for monetary rewards.

Rasheed said, “The successful establishment of private universities heavily relies on the passion and dedication of individuals.”

Addressing the university proprietors, the NUC director assured them of the commission’s unwavering support and cooperation in advancing the university system, particularly in terms of quality assurance.

David Adejo, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering public-private partnerships, particularly in the education sector, which has led to the emergence of these new universities.
