President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a national address on Monday, June 12, in observance of Democracy Day.
The announcement was made by George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, during a press conference in Abuja on Friday. Akume explained that this year’s commemoration of Democracy Day would be a modest event due to the grand presidential inauguration that took place two weeks ago.
He emphasized the importance of annually celebrating Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 as a tribute to the courageous individuals who tirelessly fought for the establishment of democratic governance in Nigeria since 1999.
Akume clarified that May 29 still marks the anniversary of the power transition, which occurs every four years as stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.Akume said, “In commemorating this year’s anniversary, it is important for citizens and foreigners alike to reflect on the nation’s progress and assess the dividends that democracy has yielded, as well as areas where improvements are needed,”
It is in light of this that the theme of this year’s Democracy celebration is “Hope Reassured”.
“It is pertinent to state that having had an elaborate Presidential inauguration this year, activities to mark the 2023 June 12, Democracy Day will be low key.
