Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, hailing him as one of the most influential managers in the last two decades.
Despite Guardiola’s remarkable success, winning his 11th league title in three different countries with Manchester City’s recent Premier League triumph, he believes the manager of the year recognition belongs to De Zerbi, who has excelled since Graham Potter’s departure.
Under De Zerbi’s guidance, Brighton has achieved their first-ever qualification for European competition, and Guardiola has marveled at their unique style of play. He acknowledged that De Zerbi’s impact on the Premier League has surpassed his expectations, with Brighton creating an impressive 20 to 25 chances per game and dominating possession like few others.
Guardiola commended De Zerbi’s ability to revolutionize the way Brighton plays, drawing a parallel to Ferran Adria, a renowned chef in Catalonia who transformed cuisine. He emphasized that what Brighton is doing is truly exceptional.
Both Brighton and City’s final-day opponents Brentford utilize a data-driven recruitment model, which Guardiola believes is effective. However, he also stressed the importance of other factors such as a player’s personality, mentality, and playing style, as well as the relationship with the manager.
Guardiola admires Brighton’s strategic approach of luring opponents in before releasing a pass, noting that they excel in timing their movements and waiting for the right opportunity. He considers Brighton a team from whom he constantly seeks to learn.
