Pep Guardiola has drawn a parallel between Manchester City’s quest to clinch the Premier League title this weekend and serving for a championship at Wimbledon.
If Arsenal lose to Nottingham Forest on Saturday or if City defeats Chelsea the next day, they will secure the title. Additionally, City’s recent victory over Real Madrid propels them closer to achieving a remarkable Treble as they advance to the Champions League final.
Guardiola said, “Tennis players say to serve to win Wimbledon is the most difficult one,”
“It’s non-stop. Of course we are satisfied to play the Champions League final but now is coming the most difficult thing.
“But on Sunday the game is in our hands to win the most important competition.”
Guardiola highlights City’s resilient mindset throughout the season, comparing it to their previous victorious campaigns, even though they spent a significant portion of this year trailing long-standing leaders Arsenal.
Despite an eight-point deficit to the Gunners in early April, City’s unwavering determination led to an impressive streak of 11 consecutive league victories, dating back to February. As a result, they have now established a four-point lead at the top of the table, aiming to secure their fifth Premier League title in six seasons.
Guardiola noted that “Now we talk about mentalities because we won. And I don’t believe in that. I defend the team when we lose and they had the same mentality,”.
“This is the reality. To recover eight points on Arsenal – first we had one game in hand in that moment, so it was a little bit fake but we knew we had to win almost all games and they had to drop it.”. he added
“If Arsenal had maintained the same rhythm as the first leg [half of the season] and doing what they had done it would not be possible to catch them. But they drop a few points and we were there. Again, another season, and that means a lot to us.” He concluded.
