Ceekay Igara, the Chairman of the Labour Party in Abia State, has strongly disagreed with the court ruling that sacked Abia State Governor-elect, Dr. Alex Otti, and other elected party candidates. Igara stated that the judgment holds no validity and is bound to be overturned.
In a statement released in Umuahia on Friday afternoon, shortly after the court ruling, Igara urged all Labour Party candidates and party members to remain calm and not be alarmed. He reassured them that the party’s legal team is actively addressing the matter.
Furthermore, Igara affirmed that the scheduled May 29 inauguration of the governor-elect will proceed as planned, despite the court ruling.
Earlier on Friday, Justice Mohammed Yunusa of the Federal High Court in Kano invalidated the candidature of Otti and all Labour Party candidates in Abia and Kano states. The court ruled that their emergence did not comply with the provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act.
The lawsuit filed by Mr. Ibrahim Haruna Ibrahim against the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) argued that the party’s failure to submit its membership register to INEC within the stipulated 30 days before their primaries rendered the entire process null and void.
