Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has been presented before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun at a Magistrate’s court in Yaba, Lagos State, by the Lagos State Police Command.

He is facing charges of assaulting a police officer, which is in violation of Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act. The police prosecutor, S. A Adebese, requested the court to detain the defendant for 21 days until receiving legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. However, the defense counsel led by Femi Falana, SAN, appealed to the court not to remand his client, citing unawareness of the remand application.

On Saturday, a video of Seun Kuti assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State went viral. In response to an arrest order issued by the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, Kuti voluntarily turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja on Monday. Subsequently, he was transferred to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department at Panti, Lagos.
