Nigerian Senators Demand Urgent Action on Passport Processing Delays

The Nigerian Senate has launched an investigation into the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) over the delays in issuing and renewing international passports.

The Senate has instructed its Committee on Interior, led by Senator Kashim Shettima, to carry out a comprehensive probe into the award of the contract for passport production and report back to the Senate in two weeks.

Senator Uche Ekwunife, who sponsored the motion titled “Delay on issuance, renewal of Nigeria International Passport by the Nigerian Immigration Services,” stated that the prolonged delay in the issuance and renewal of passports by the NIS has caused untold hardship to Nigerians. She added that it now takes between three to six months to process passport applications, which is far beyond the six weeks processing time promised by the Federal Government.
