Workers’ Day: Organised Labour Demands Retirement Age and Service Years Review, Independent Panel to Probe INEC Chairman

The May Day Celebration is a celebration that occurs on the first of May every year to celebrate the effort of workers in every sector of the country. During this year’s Workers’ Day Celebration with the theme ‘Workers’ Rights and Socioeconomic Justice,’ the Organised Labour demanded the review of the retirement age for public servants from 60 to 65 years and from 35 years to 40 years of service.

The Organized Labour also called for an independent panel to investigate the conduct of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and his team during the 2023 general elections. The Body also demanded an investigation into the Ministry of Aviation’s N12bn expenditure to purchase ten fire trucks.

The event was the last Workers’ Day celebration to be held under President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

The President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, noted that equitable treatment, fairness, and justice were necessary for the country’s progress, and urged for better wages and workplace rights for workers. The President of the TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo, criticized the country’s economic situation, stating that policies detrimental to the nation’s progress were being enacted by those in power.

Among those who attended the event were the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha, the Minister of Labour and Employment Chris Ngige, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Mohammed Bello, and Pauline Tallen, the Minister of Women Affairs.
