The Nigerian government has established a committee to help rescue Nigerian citizens who are currently trapped in Sudan due to the current unrest in the country.
This was confirmed in a statement released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Saturday.
The government expressed concern on Friday about the challenges of evacuating Nigerians from Sudan due to the ongoing crisis. The committee, consisting of professional emergency responders and search and rescue experts, will work towards finding the safest way to evacuate the Nigerian citizens, even if it requires going through a neighbouring country.
NEMA is in constant communication with relevant partners, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, and security agencies.
Despite the complexities of the emergency in Sudan with ongoing fighting between factions and closed airports and land borders, NEMA is actively gathering updated information to ensure a safe and dignified return for all stranded Nigerians. The Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed, stated that the agency is committed to working on all possible options to bring the stranded Nigerians back home safely and with dignity.
