Ogun Tribunal Flooded with 19 Election Petitions Amid Claims of Irregularities

The Ogun State Election Petition Tribunal has received 19 petitions from candidates and political parties contesting the results of the February to March 2023 general elections in the state.

According to Ezenta Obioma, the tribunal’s secretary, various candidates and parties filed these petitions, including two from the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party’s (NNPP) Ajadi Oguntoyinbo. They both challenge the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) Governor, Dapo Abiodun’s victory.

Furthermore, the tribunal received 17 petitions from state constituency House of Assembly candidates, including 16 from the PDP and one from the APC. Adebutu seeks an order from the court to declare him as the winner of the election or to order INEC to conduct a fresh election in 99 polling units in 41 wards. These areas cut across 16 local government areas of the state, where elections were not held, or were canceled due to disruption and over-voting.

Similarly, the NNPP candidate contests the omission of his party’s name on the ballot papers used for the governorship election by INEC. The tribunal is yet to commence sitting, and the secretary couldn’t provide a precise start date since they are still at the filing stage.
