Authorities have announced that three individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder of a provincial governor and eight others, while another suspect was killed in a shoot-out.
The attack occurred on Saturday in the heartland of the Philippines’ sugarcane-growing region, leaving 17 people injured. In the governor’s residence in Pamplona municipality, Negros Oriental, at least six gunmen, wearing military-style uniforms and armed with rifles, opened fire. Governor Roel Degamo was the latest victim of a recent wave of assaults on local Philippine politicians; he is at least the third to have been shot since last year’s general election. Two of the three arrested suspects were former soldiers dishonourably discharged several years ago, according to a statement from the Philippine Army.
A fourth suspect died in a shootout on a plantation on Saturday night, according to police spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Gerard Pelare, who told journalists that around 10 suspects were involved in the attack. Following the closure of ports to prevent their escape, authorities believe the remaining suspects are still on the island.
The death toll had initially been reported as six, but police raised it to nine on Saturday night. Thirteen people were hospitalized with injuries, while four others were treated for minor injuries. Negros Oriental is one of two provinces on Negros Island, which is home to the nation’s sugar industry, wealthy landowners, and poor farm workers.
The Supreme Court recently declared Governor Degamo the rightful winner of the Negros Oriental governorship after a recount that overturned his rival’s proclamation as the victor. During President Ferdinand Marcos’ campaign, Degamo supported him. Marcos has condemned the “dastardly and heinous” assassination of his political ally, and top officials, including police and military chiefs, have been sent to investigate. Authorities presented evidence on Sunday, including high-powered firearms and camouflage uniforms, gathered from the suspects, and pledged to solve the case.
The Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos has promised to capture the culprit. In his statement, he said “We will capture the mastermind, I assure you that,”
