An appeal by suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, seeking the reversal of a Federal High Court’s decision to deny him bail, has been dismissed by the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
The unanimous judgement of a three-man panel, delivered by Justice Stephen Adah, stated that given the seriousness of the charges against Kyari and others before the trial court, bail requests needed to be handled with caution. Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, who denied Kyari’s bail earlier, was found to have appropriately exercised his discretion. Kyari, a former head of the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, is facing charges of conspiracy to deal in cocaine and unlawfully tampering with seized cocaine, alongside four other members of the IRT.
