Arsenal have achieved one of their most impressive results in recent memory, securing a dominant 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
The first half at the Emirates saw both teams create chances, but it was Declan Rice who broke the deadlock in the 58th minute, curling a stunning free-kick around Madrid’s wall to give Arsenal the lead. Just 12 minutes later, Rice struck again, this time delivering another exquisite free-kick that left Madrid’s goalkeeper with no chance. Arsenal then compounded Madrid’s woes when makeshift striker Mikel Merino finished with precision from close range in the 75th minute, making it 3-0.
To add to Madrid’s frustration, Eduardo Camavinga was shown a second yellow card in the dying minutes of the match, meaning he will be unavailable for the second leg after already receiving a suspension for his first booking.
The two teams will face off again next Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu for the crucial return leg.
