Arsenal Dominate North London Derby with Russo’s Early Strike and Slegers’ Tactical Mastery

Alessia Russo struck just 63 seconds into the match to set Arsenal on course for a commanding 3-0 victory over Tottenham in the north London derby. Her early goal, the second-fastest in Arsenal’s Women’s Super League history, was followed by strikes from Frida Maanum and Stina Blackstenius, cementing interim manager Renee Slegers’ impressive start in charge.

Slegers, who stepped in after Jonas Eidevall’s resignation in October, has quickly made her mark. The Gunners followed up their resounding 4-0 Champions League triumph over Juventus on Tuesday with another dominant performance, this time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Russo’s opener came courtesy of a brilliant assist from Mariona Caldentey, who was instrumental throughout the game. With Spurs barely able to touch the ball in the opening moments, Caldentey threaded a precise pass through the defense, allowing Russo to fire a first-time shot into the bottom-left corner. The early blow left Tottenham reeling, and Arsenal capitalized on their strong start with a second goal before Spurs could muster any significant threat.

England captain Leah Williamson initiated the move for the second, splitting the defense with a perfectly weighted pass to Kim Little. The Arsenal skipper found Maanum inside the box, and the forward made no mistake, calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to double the lead.

After the break, Arsenal continued to dominate, turning up the intensity and leaving Spurs chasing shadows. The third goal, which sealed the result, showcased Caldentey’s brilliance once again. Her exquisite first-time clipped pass sent Blackstenius through on goal, and the Swedish striker coolly finished at the near post in a one-on-one situation.

The gulf in class between the two teams was evident throughout, with Arsenal’s superior skill and cohesion overwhelming a Tottenham side that has now won just once in their last seven league matches. The Gunners’ victory not only secured three points but also underscored their strength under Slegers’ guidance as they push to maintain their unbeaten run since their loss to Chelsea in October.
