After a gripping 90 minutes, Nigeria battled their way to the final whistle in a hard-fought draw against Benin Republic, ultimately securing their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). Despite the tie, it was a tense and challenging match, with Benin Republic putting on a strong display that kept Nigeria’s Super Eagles on their toes, especially in the first half.

Benin Republic struck early with a goal from Mohamed Tijani in the 16th minute, seizing an early lead and immediately putting pressure on Nigeria. Throughout the first half, the Super Eagles struggled to find control of the game. A promising opportunity for Nigeria came in the 41st minute when Ademola Lookman sent a well-placed cross to Victor Osimhen. But Osimhen’s header just missed the target, wasting a critical chance to level the score.

Benin Republic showed clear determination and seemed fully committed to winning, while Nigeria appeared to lack a clear strategy in the opening half. However, the Super Eagles returned to the second half with renewed energy and purpose, sparking a more dynamic and competitive 45 minutes.

The game’s momentum shifted in Nigeria’s favor after a skillful pass from Moses Simon found Victor Osimhen. In the 81st minute, Osimhen finally broke through, scoring the equalizer and revitalizing Nigeria’s hopes. In the closing minutes, defenders Ola Aina and Calvin Bassey, along with captain William Troost-Ekong, held the line with impressive defensive plays, blocking Benin’s attempts to reclaim the lead.

The draw sealed Nigeria’s qualification for Afcon 2025, while Benin Republic will need to pursue additional points in their next match to keep their qualification hopes alive.
