Bayo’s Strike Lifts Watford to Fourth in Championship with 1-0 Win Over Oxford

Watford climbed from seventh to fourth in the Championship table after Vakoun Bayo’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 home victory over Oxford. Tom Cleverley’s side leapfrogged Burnley, West Brom, and Millwall thanks to Bayo’s 54th-minute strike. Oxford’s Greg Leigh fired the first shot over the bar before play was briefly stopped twice, first for a challenge on Oxford’s keeper Jamie Cumming and then for Watford’s Mattie Pollock, who returned to the game after signing a contract extension.

Oxford appealed for a penalty when Ruben Rodrigues appeared to be held by James Morris, but referee Anthony Backhouse dismissed it. Tyler Goodrham’s speculative shot went wide, and although Bayo later missed a chance, he was ruled offside, incorrectly as replays showed.

After several close calls, Watford finally broke through when Ryan Andrews intercepted a pass, setting up Kwadwo Baah’s sprint down the right. Baah’s cross found Bayo, who converted after his first attempt was saved. Oxford nearly equalized when Hidde ter Avest’s shot was saved by Daniel Bachmann, who later denied Mark Harris. Harris missed another chance with an overhead kick as Oxford pressed in the final moments.
