Khadija Shaw made history in the Women’s Super League (WSL), netting a record-breaking hat-trick to lead Manchester City to a dominant 4-0 victory over Tottenham, which lifted them four points clear at the top of the table. Shaw’s treble not only helped secure the win at the Etihad Stadium but also etched her name in the league’s history books. She now holds the record for the most WSL hat-tricks with six, surpassing Vivianne Miedema, and has become the first player in the league to record three hat-tricks against a single team.
Shaw opened the scoring in sensational fashion just 22 seconds into the match. A defensive lapse by Spurs’ Clare Hunt allowed Shaw to steal the ball and fire it into the far corner, putting City ahead before Tottenham could settle into the game. Just 15 minutes later, Shaw struck again, rising unchallenged to meet a pinpoint cross from Lauren Hemp and ease any early nerves among the City supporters.
Tottenham struggled to mount any real threat throughout the night, finishing without a single shot on target. City, in contrast, poured forward in wave after wave of attack. Shaw came close to securing her hat-trick in the first half but sent a header narrowly wide. Jill Roord appeared to add another goal for City, but it was ruled out due to a correct offside call on Aoba Fujino.
In the second half, Lauren Hemp nearly scored a third for City in spectacular style, with her powerful shot from inside the box rattling off both posts and the crossbar. However, just minutes later, Hemp’s dazzling solo run ended in an assist to Roord, who curled the ball home to make it 3-0.
City’s relentless pressure paid off yet again shortly afterward, with Hemp bursting into the box and delivering another perfect cross for Shaw. Shaw completed her historic hat-trick with a simple tap-in, capping off an unforgettable night for both her and her team as they further cemented their lead at the top of the WSL.
