Tottenham staged an impressive comeback, scoring three goals in eight second-half minutes to secure a 4-1 win over a 10-man West Ham side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This victory came as a much-needed response after their disappointing collapse against Brighton during the international break.
Spurs started brightly, but early frustrations set in after Mohammed Kudus opened the scoring for West Ham in the 18th minute. The Ghanaian had been a constant threat, forcing a brilliant save from Guglielmo Vicario just moments before he connected with Jarrod Bowen’s cross to put the Hammers ahead. Tottenham struggled to capitalize on their chances despite their energetic start, with Heung-min Son curling a shot narrowly wide and Brennan Johnson misfiring from close range after the ball deflected off his shoulder.
However, Spurs found a lifeline when Dejan Kulusevski’s shot beat Alphonse Areola, hit both posts, and finally crept over the line, much to the relief of the home crowd. With the breakthrough achieved, Spurs gained momentum. Manager Ange Postecoglou made a tactical shift at halftime, bringing on Pape Sarr for James Maddison, which proved decisive.
Yves Bissouma leveled the score in the 52nd minute, and just three minutes later, a “comical” own goal from Areola—after a deflection from Jean-Clair Todibo—gave Spurs the lead. Son quickly added the third goal in the 60th minute, smashing the ball in at the far post to cap off a blistering eight-minute spell.
West Ham’s afternoon worsened when Kudus was sent off following a VAR review for raising his hands towards Micky van de Ven and Pape Sarr. Initially shown a yellow card, the referee upgraded it to a red after reviewing the incident, sealing a miserable day for Julen Lopetegui’s side as Tottenham celebrated a remarkable comeback.
