President Bola Tinubu has expressed his relief and satisfaction at the safe return of the Super Eagles to Nigeria following their challenging experience in Libya, which occurred ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President conveyed his deep concern over the inhumane treatment that the players and officials endured during their time in Libya.
He praised the resilience and determination of the Super Eagles, commending them for maintaining their spirits in the face of such adversity.
The statement further noted, “President Tinubu urges the Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to recommend appropriate actions against those who deliberately violated CAF’s Statutes and Regulations.”
Additionally, the President acknowledged the effective collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Sports Development in managing this unfortunate situation and ensuring the safe return of the players.
President Tinubu emphasized the unifying power of football in bringing people and nations together, condemning the treatment of the Super Eagles as unsportsmanlike and inhumane—qualities that starkly contrast with the spirit of the game that he values deeply.
He fervently called upon all football enthusiasts and administrators to unite and collaborate in preventing and addressing similar incidents in the future, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the dignity and welfare of athletes.
