Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerian leaders to wisely utilize the country’s abundant resources to drive national development. Speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja on Sunday, he stressed that Nigeria possesses all the necessary elements for success and prosperity.
Obasanjo echoed the sentiments expressed by Methodist Prelate Dr. Oliver Aba, highlighting the importance of recognizing and appreciating the blessings that God has bestowed upon the nation. He stated, “I firmly believe that God did not create Nigeria to struggle. He has equipped us with everything we need; it is our responsibility to show gratitude, particularly since many countries do not possess what Nigeria has.”
The anniversary service also honored several distinguished individuals with the Knights of John Wesley award, including Obasanjo himself, former Presidents Yakubu Gowon and Goodluck Jonathan, President Bola Tinubu and his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, as well as other prominent figures such as George Akume and Godswill Akpabio. Additional award recipients included David Mark and Wale Edun, among others.
During his address, Obasanjo called upon leaders, clergy, and citizens to unite in prayer for the healing of the nation, recognizing that Nigeria’s current challenges are not a result of divine intervention. “We have misused God’s gifts, but if we humble ourselves and seek His guidance, He will heal our land,” he emphasized.
President Bola Tinubu, represented at the event by Mr. Nyesom Wike, commended the Methodist Church Nigeria for its unwavering commitment to social justice, education, and humanitarian efforts. In his goodwill message, Tinubu praised the church for its pioneering role and impactful vision, highlighting the significant contributions it has made to society.
This celebration not only marks a milestone for the Methodist Archdiocese but also serves as a reminder of the vital role that faith and community play in addressing the challenges facing Nigeria today.
