The House of Representatives has expressed its gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for rectifying what it described as a “significant historical oversight” by conferring the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.
This recognition followed a previous motion passed by the House, which emphasized that it should not be regarded as inferior to the Senate. The motion came in response to the earlier conferment of the GCON on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while Speaker Abbas had only been awarded the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
On Friday, President Tinubu responded to the House’s appeal by upgrading Speaker Abbas’s award to the GCON, thereby ensuring both chambers of the National Assembly receive equal recognition.
In a statement released on Saturday by the House’s spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the legislative body welcomed the President’s decision, stating that it had restored “parity between both chambers of the National Assembly.”
In response to the development, Speaker Abbas commended President Tinubu for his commitment to justice, fairness, and ensuring balanced recognition of the leadership of both chambers.
