Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, on Saturday announced a significant allocation of N20 billion aimed at rebuilding infrastructure damaged by the September 10 flood and providing relief to those affected. This allocation is part of the state’s broader effort to address the devastating impact of the disaster.
Governor Zulum also extended his heartfelt appreciation to individuals, state governments, corporate bodies, and various Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) for their timely assistance and support during Borno’s time of need. The flood had ravaged parts of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and several surrounding local government areas, displacing thousands of residents.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Zulum made the announcement during a ceremony held at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Maiduguri, where he inaugurated a special committee tasked with investigating the cause of the Alau Dam’s collapse, which contributed to the flood.
According to the governor, half of the allocated funds—N10 billion—will go directly toward providing immediate relief to flood victims, helping them rebuild their lives. He directed that this sum be deposited into the state’s relief account and managed by a disbursement committee, which will include representatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), as well as security agencies to ensure transparency.
The remaining N10 billion, as per Zulum’s directive, will be allocated to the Ministry of Works and Housing for the reconstruction of critical infrastructure.
Zulum also expressed his deep gratitude to the Federal Government for its continuous and unwavering support during this difficult time.
