The Kano State Private Health Institution Management Agency (PHIMA) has shut down four medicine patent facilities in the Rogo Local Government Area due to illegal operations and failure to comply with the agency’s regulations. The closures were part of an ongoing effort to enforce the laws governing private health institutions in the state and ensure the safety and quality of healthcare services.
On Friday, the Director General of PHIMA, Prof. Salisu Tofa, led a team of inspectors to the affected facilities. Represented by Abdussalam Zarewa, a director within the agency, Prof. Tofa emphasized that the goal of the inspection was to sanitize the health sector in Kano State by identifying and addressing illegal practices. The four facilities were found to be operating without the necessary registration and approval from PHIMA, which is a violation of the agency’s laws.
Prof. Tofa explained that the facilities were providing unauthorized medical services, including blood transfusions, blood tests, and administering drips, all without a proper laboratory setup. This, he noted, also contravened the guidelines of the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria. The proprietors of the facilities were directed to register with PHIMA and pay a fine of N50,000 to legalize their operations and avoid further punitive measures.
The affected facilities include Sayane Nagari, Damagari, Zoza Ward; Muktar Danjume, Taimakon Alumma, Kwanar Jajaye Ward; Jonathan Magaji, Rahab Philip Chemist, Barbaji Jajaye Ward; and Blessing Yanoko Chemist, Yanoko Fulatan Ward. Additionally, Maigayya Clinic and Maternity, located in Yanoko Fulatan Ward, was issued a summons to appear before PHIMA, failing which the facility would face permanent closure.
In response to the agency’s actions, the proprietors of the affected facilities acknowledged their violations and pledged to visit PHIMA’s office to complete the necessary registration procedures and ensure compliance with the law.
