Dr. Nsikak Akpan, a lecturer at Foreign Links College of Health Sciences in Moro, Osun State, set a new world record for the longest marathon lecture on Sunday. Speaking with journalists prior to the event, held at the college campus, Akpan revealed that his application to Guinness World Records, with reference number 240427100506lml, had been approved for a 150-hour lecture marathon attempt.

He surpassed the previous record, set by India’s Prof. Arvin Mishra in 2014, at around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, when he completed 142 hours of continuous lecturing. Mishra’s record stood at 139 hours, 52 minutes, and 42 seconds. Akpan went on to achieve his goal of 150 hours by 2:30 p.m., sparking celebrations among students and journalists present.

Despite suffering a medical emergency on Friday, which required treatment before resuming, Akpan remained determined to continue. “When the illness happened, I never thought of quitting. I was prepared for it. After being treated and cleared to continue, I pushed on,” he said.

Reflecting on the challenges he faced, Akpan noted that some doubted the attempt due to financial concerns. “People thought we wouldn’t achieve this because of money, but we proved them wrong,” he added.
