Nigeria and Mastercard have partnered to support one million African farmers in boosting agricultural productivity and improving yields. The project will assist farmers in Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania, focusing on financial inclusion and expanding digital access, with backing from the African Development Bank.

The deal was sealed during a meeting between Vice President Kashim Shettima and Mastercard executives at the 79th UN General Assembly in New York. Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, disclosed the agreement in a statement.

Vice President Shettima highlighted the partnership’s potential to enhance Africa’s food security, emphasizing that Mastercard’s expertise will open new opportunities for farmers. Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, added that the initiative will provide agricultural workers with vital digital financial tools to boost productivity.

Dr. Folasade Femi-Lawal, Mastercard’s Country Manager for West Africa, announced plans to introduce 160 contactless payment seminars next February as part of the partnership’s rollout.
