On Friday, Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), officially handed over €5,100 to Juan Sell, the Spanish ambassador to Nigeria. This amount was recovered from a Nigerian romance scammer who defrauded a Spanish victim, Heinz Uchtmann. The recovery was the result of a collaborative effort between the EFCC and the Spanish Police.

According to a statement by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC, Olukoyede highlighted that the financial resources controlled by criminals globally far exceed the wealth generated by the technology sector. He emphasized that the borderless nature of cybercrime necessitates international cooperation and partnership among countries and law enforcement agencies.

Olukoyede reaffirmed the EFCC’s determination to make Nigeria an inhospitable place for corrupt and fraudulent activities.

In his remarks, Ambassador Sell praised the joint efforts between the EFCC and Spanish Police, noting the importance of seeing tangible results from such collaborations. He stated, “Often, one works on processes without witnessing the outcomes. However, this case stands out as a testament to the effective partnership between our two friendly nations, delivering concrete benefits to our citizens.”
