The Sokoto State Government has filed a petition before the state’s Commission of Inquiry against the former administration of Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, accusing it of diverting N16.1 billion in shares through the state’s investment company. According to the petition, a further N4 billion is alleged to have been distributed through various private and corporate accounts.
In addition to the government’s allegations, the Commission has also received several petitions from private individuals concerning land disputes, encroachments, and other related grievances.
Following the proceedings on Tuesday, the Commission’s counsel, Amanzi Amanzi, spoke to journalists, explaining that the alleged diversion involved proceeds from the sale of government shares between 2018 and 2023, with the funds reportedly unaccounted for. Amanzi noted that the petition had been submitted by Permanent Secretary Abdullahi Yabo, who urged the Commission to thoroughly investigate the transfer process and sale of the state-owned shares, as well as the final destination of the sale proceeds.
The inquiry now seeks to uncover the details of these transactions and ensure accountability for the significant sums of money in question.
