The Federal Government has revealed plans to restructure the 115 Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria, separating them into basic and secondary schools. This was announced by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, during the opening of the Annual General Meeting of Principals of Unity Colleges in Abuja on Tuesday. The meeting’s theme was “Entrepreneurship Education: A Panacea for Self-Reliance and National Development.”
Sununu emphasized that the decision to reorganize the Unity Colleges is in line with the National Policy on Education. He explained that this move would not only attract increased funding but also improve infrastructure, enhance teacher welfare, and create job opportunities.
The Minister assured that the Ministry, in collaboration with relevant government bodies, is committed to implementing this reform as soon as possible. He also urged the Principals, as key stakeholders, to actively support efforts to improve the schools’ educational standards.
Sununu further stressed the importance of addressing social vices, promoting a culture of maintenance among students, and fostering strong relationships with host communities for the benefit of the schools’ security and growth.
Dr. Idowu Akinbamijo, Chairperson of the Principals of Federal Unity Schools, noted that the meeting aimed to set priorities for the upcoming year and equip participants for the challenges ahead.
