The Federal Government of Nigeria on Sunday received a shipment of 50 tonnes of humanitarian aid from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to assist Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) impacted by recent flooding in various parts of the country.

The relief materials arrived at the Cargo wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at approximately 2:40 p.m. The UAE’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Salem Alshamsi, formally handed over the supplies to Nigerian authorities.

Ambassador Alshamsi noted that the donation aligns with the UAE’s ongoing commitment to support nations facing the aftermath of natural disasters. He explained that the aid was sent under the directive of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed Al Nahyan, with the aim of alleviating the hardships caused by the devastating floods.

Upon receiving the relief items, Dr. Ahmed Dunoma, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed gratitude to the government and people of the UAE for their timely assistance. He assured that the aid would be distributed to those in need, specifically targeting communities severely affected by the floods.

Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), also emphasized that the relief supplies would be promptly dispatched to flood-impacted states such as Borno, once cleared. Dunoma further described the aid as an unprecedented gesture, underscoring the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the UAE, and highlighting the significance of such international support during times of crisis.
