Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, has called on the Federal Government and relevant agencies to ensure that the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States are conducted transparently and fairly. In an interview in Lagos on Sunday, Anyaoku emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of these elections, which are set for September 21 in Edo and November 16 in Ondo.

As a seasoned diplomat and respected elder statesman, Anyaoku stressed that both the Nigerian public and the international community are expecting the elections to be credible and free from manipulation. He urged key institutions, particularly the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security forces, and other relevant bodies, to uphold the standards necessary for fair elections.

Anyaoku further noted that the world is closely monitoring Nigeria, and the way these elections are conducted will have significant implications for how the country is perceived on the global stage. He emphasized that ensuring free and fair elections is crucial for Nigeria’s democratic reputation and its relationships with international partners.
