The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension for the collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs), moving the deadline from September 13 to September 15, 2024. This extension aims to provide eligible voters additional time to collect their cards and participate in the upcoming election.
According to a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the decision was made in response to the need for greater voter access to their PVCs. He noted that the Chairman of INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, along with the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, addressed stakeholders during a meeting and addressed concerns related to both the electoral process and security issues surrounding the election.
The statement further explained that the interactive session, held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City, served as a platform for dialogue ahead of the Edo State governorship election, which is scheduled for the following week. The meeting saw participation from a wide array of stakeholders, including political party leaders, candidates, traditional rulers, religious figures, security personnel, civil society groups, and members of the media.
