The Kano State Government (KNSG), in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has provided relief supplies to 553 households impacted by the 2024 windstorm in the state.
The distributed relief materials included 1,450 bags of 25kg rice, 1,450 bags of 25kg maize, 100 cartons of vegetable oil, 100 cartons of seasoning cubes, and 100 bags of iodized salt. Additionally, 1,450 blankets, nylon mats, and treated mosquito nets were among the other essential items given to the affected families.
During the launch of the distribution for victims in Minjibir and Gabasawa Local Government Areas, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by the State Commissioner of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi, urged communities to prioritize safety measures, such as clearing drainage systems and refraining from dumping waste into water channels.
The governor also noted that Kano State had organized meetings with stakeholders and launched public awareness campaigns to prevent flooding. He expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and NEMA for their continued support.
NEMA Director-General Hajiya Zubaida Umar mentioned that the distribution was part of the Federal Government’s initiative to assist disaster victims and aid in the recovery of affected communities.
Speaking through the Coordinator of the NEMA Kano Territorial Office, Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, she emphasized that the relief items were intended to provide comfort and ease the challenges faced by the victims.
Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), encouraged recipients to make good use of the materials and called on residents to remain committed to the state’s progress.
Representing the beneficiaries, Laure Yahaya from Gabasawa Local Government expressed deep gratitude, stating that the relief supplies would greatly help reduce the hardships caused by the windstorm.
