Peter Afunanya, the Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications at the Department of State Services (DSS) National Headquarters in Abuja, has been reassigned to a new role. Afunanya announced his reassignment during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, September 4, but did not disclose details about his new position.
He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the DSS spokesperson over the past decade and reiterated his commitment to the agency and the country. Afunanya pledged to continue serving Nigeria with “love, loyalty, honor, and glory” in whatever capacity he is assigned.
This development follows the recent appointment of Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi as the new Director General of the DSS. Upon taking office, Ajayi emphasized his intention to return the agency to its core principles of covert operations and strategic silence, while addressing the significant economic, political, and security challenges facing Nigeria.
Additionally, the sudden resignations of the former DSS Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Abubakar, have been linked to dissatisfaction at the highest levels of government with the performance of these agencies. President Bola Tinubu and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu reportedly raised concerns about the intelligence-gathering effectiveness of both agencies following two critical incidents: the violent #EndBadGovernance protests in several northern states and the unexpected seizure of three Nigerian presidential aircraft in France by the Chinese company Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited.
