Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has voiced concerns about the recent police summons of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero. In a statement on Thursday via X, Obi highlighted the delicate nature of the situation, given Ajaero’s pivotal role as the head of the nation’s workforce. Obi remarked, “The anxiety surrounding the Nigeria Police’s invitation to NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, is understandable due to the significant position he holds in mediating various labor disputes and other national issues on behalf of the workforce.”
Obi urged that proper legal procedures be followed, acknowledging the gravity of the allegations against Ajaero but noting the uncertainty over whether these charges pertain to his personal actions or his official duties as NLC leader. He cautioned, “Great care must be taken in handling this matter. It’s not surprising that the government might resort to authoritarian tactics, viewing labor as a potential adversary.”
The former governor also called on authorities to adhere to the rule of law and ensure evidence-based processes are observed in the case. “Summons like the one issued to Ajaero are not unusual. However, it is crucial that the rule of law and evidentiary standards are upheld. The labor movement should focus on its strengths to preserve democratic order and stability,” Obi stated.
This follows the Nigeria Police Force’s summons of Ajaero on August 19 for questioning over allegations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and related offenses. The invitation, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, warned of a potential arrest warrant if Ajaero did not comply.
In response, the NLC convened an emergency National Executive Council meeting, resolving to shut down the country if Ajaero is detained or arrested. The council urged Ajaero to comply with the police summons while expressing their readiness to defend their leader against what they consider undue harassment.
