The governorship race in Edo State is heating up as a recent pre-election poll places the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mr. Asue Ighodalo, in a strong lead. Conducted by the Africa Polling Institute (API) from August 12th to 16th, 2024, the survey shows Ighodalo leading with 43% of the vote, well ahead of his closest competitor, Mr. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who has 20%. Mr. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) follows with 9%.

According to Professor Bell Ihua, Executive Director of API, the poll highlights a crucial factor in the upcoming election: undecided voters. With 28% of respondents still uncertain, the final result remains open, providing an opportunity for the leading candidates to influence these vital votes.

The API poll reflects the mood of Edo State voters as they approach the gubernatorial election. A significant 94% of respondents have registered and collected their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs), with 83% stating they have given considerable thought to the election.

The poll also examined voter confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the electoral process. Results show varied opinions: 47% of respondents have little to no confidence in INEC’s ability to ensure a fair election, 34% have some confidence, and 19% fully trust the electoral body. Despite these mixed feelings, 80% of those surveyed feel secure about voting on election day.
