The bye-election tribunal in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, has overturned the election of Engr Simon Atigwe, the House of Representatives member for Igboeze North/Udenu Federal Constituency. The tribunal declared Hon Dennis Agbo of the Labour Party as the rightful winner of the February 3rd, 2024 rerun election.
Agbo had initially secured the seat in the 2023 general election before his victory was overturned by the Court of Appeal, which mandated a rerun in ten polling units. The petition that led to Agbo’s initial removal was filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, who argued that the scores from the affected units did not reflect the APC’s results. Prior to the court-ordered rerun, Agbo was leading the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate by over 10,000 votes.
