The Federal Ministry of Health, in partnership with state health ministries and key stakeholders, has rolled out a $1.2 billion Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) to overhaul Nigeria’s healthcare system. During a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Dr. Muntaqa Umar-Sadiq, the National Coordinator of SWAp, highlighted that this initiative is a strategic response to longstanding issues such as underfunding, staff shortages, poor data management, and inadequate infrastructure in the health sector.

Umar-Sadiq stated that SWAp marks a significant move towards a more integrated and efficient healthcare system, with the ultimate aim of providing all Nigerians, regardless of location or income, with access to quality healthcare services. He further noted that the program was launched to address the dire health situation in Nigeria, where maternal mortality rates remain alarmingly high.
