The Senate has categorically denied allegations that it has a role in setting its own salaries or receives special financial packages from the Presidency. These accusations, reportedly made during a visit by House of Representatives members to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, have generated significant political debate.
In a statement released on Sunday, August 11, Senate Spokesman Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South) dismissed the claims, labeling them as an attempt to “demonize the legislature by those engaging in political hypocrisy.” Adaramodu insisted that no Senator has received any monetary benefits from the Presidency and clarified that the constituency projects associated with the Senate are merely proposed and nominated by Senators, a practice typical in many democracies. He further stated that the Senate’s salaries are strictly determined by the Revenue Mobilisation Fiscal Allocation Commission, in full compliance with the constitution. Adaramodu challenged anyone with credible evidence to present it, calling the notion that the National Assembly sets its own salaries unfounded and malicious.
