Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has suggested that many leaders in Nigeria and Africa deserve imprisonment or even the death penalty for their corrupt and harmful actions. Speaking at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo argued that the real issue in Nigeria and Africa is not the system but the flawed mentality of the leaders. He warned that even with reforms, no progress will be made if leaders’ mindsets remain unchanged.

Obasanjo also criticized liberal democracy in Africa, noting that in many African languages, “opposition” is synonymous with “enemies,” leading to counterproductive governance. His comments came during a meeting with six federal lawmakers who are pushing for constitutional reforms, including a six-year presidential term and regional rotation of the presidency.
