Kano State Governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, announced on Sunday that he fully supports financial autonomy for local councils and plans to hold Local Government elections soon, in line with the Rule of Law.

Speaking to New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) stakeholders at Government House, Governor Yusuf noted that his administration permitted All Progressive Congress (APC) elected Local Government chairmen to complete their terms before appointing caretaker Committee Chairmen to manage Local Government Areas until the elections.

In preparation for the elections, the state government has inaugurated the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC). A statement from the Governor’s spokesperson, Mr. Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, revealed that the Governor emphasized the need to comply with the Supreme Court judgment affirming financial autonomy for the third tier of government. He stressed the importance of rule of law, financial prudence, accountability, and transparency in governance.

Governor Yusuf assured that the upcoming Local Government elections will be free, fair, and credible, encouraging opposition parties to participate and field strong candidates, as his administration will not interfere with the electoral process. He highlighted the administration’s respect for the rule of law by allowing previous Local Government Executive Councils to complete their terms despite internal pressures.

With preparations by KANSIEC in full swing, the elections are expected to be held soon. Governor Yusuf announced that party members will be invited to select candidates for the positions of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, and Councillors in the 44 Local Government Areas, expressing confidence that the NNPP will receive widespread support from the people of Kano.
