The Kano State House of Assembly has restructured the traditional leadership of the state. A new law, passed recently, establishes Kano as the primary emirate and creates three additional, subordinate emirates in Rano, Gaya, and Karaye.
These smaller emirates will have limited authority and will be accountable to the Emir of Kano. Their primary roles will involve maintaining peace, resolving local disputes, and providing advice to the Emir of Kano.
