Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd), Former Nigeria Head of State, has emphasized the need for ongoing nurturing and vigilance to sustain democracy in Nigeria.

Speaking through Gen. Adamu Jidda on Thursday in Abuja at the second edition of the ThisNigeria Newspaper Gold Prize and Annual Lecture Awards themed “25 Years of Nigeria’s Unbroken Democracy – Prospects and Possibilities,” Abubakar highlighted the importance of electoral integrity, human rights, economic development, and social justice, stating that these areas require the nation’s collective focus and action.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Abubakar acknowledged that the country’s democratic journey has faced numerous challenges.

He described democracy as an evolving process, noting that the past 25 years have demonstrated the need for constant nurturing and vigilance.

“We have faced political turbulence, economic fluctuation, and social upheaval, yet through it all, the Nigerian spirit has remained indomitable,” he stated.

Abubakar commended Nigerians for their unity in conducting inclusive, prosperous, and democratic elections despite their differences.

He expressed hope that the next 25 years would bring both challenges and opportunities, emphasizing that it is the collective responsibility of Nigerians to strengthen and build upon the current democratic foundations and institutions.

He urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s remarkable journey over the past quarter-century, noting that in 1999, Nigeria embarked on a path of democratic governance marked by aspirations, challenges, and an unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom, justice, and equality.

He also highlighted the critical role of the media in the democratic process, praising the press for acting as the watchdog of democracy by holding leaders accountable, highlighting important issues, and providing a platform for diverse voices.
