Super Eagles coach Finidi George has stepped down following a series of disappointing results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Confirming his resignation on Saturday, the former Nigerian international told channels TV, “Yes, it’s true. I have resigned.” However, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to respond officially to his departure.
Under George’s leadership, Nigeria managed a 1-1 draw against South Africa at home in Uyo and suffered a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in Abidjan, significantly jeopardizing their World Cup qualification prospects. These results extended Nigeria’s winless streak in the qualifiers, adding to their struggles under former coach Jose Peseiro.
Currently ranked 5th in Group C, ahead of only Zimbabwe, Nigeria faces an uphill battle to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup. The team’s poor performance under George sparked widespread calls for his dismissal, especially with memories of missing out on Qatar 2022 still fresh.
Following discussions after the South Africa and Benin Republic matches, the NFF and Sports Minister opted to retain George temporarily but announced plans to bring in an expatriate technical adviser for the Super Eagles. It remains unclear what role George will play in the team’s future.
In response to public dissatisfaction, the NFF issued a statement after its Executive Committee meeting on June 12, 2024, apologizing for the team’s disappointing results and promising better preparation for upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers and the resumption of World Cup qualifiers in March 2025.
The committee also resolved to hire an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles ahead of these crucial matches.
