The Federal Government has officially declared Wednesday, June 12, 2024, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, who extended congratulations to Nigerians on this significant occasion.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of reflecting on the contributions of Nigeria’s founding fathers and emphasized the need for unity, security, and peace in the nation.

He urged Nigerians to uphold democratic principles and reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to implementing positive reforms for economic revitalization and enhanced security.

Additionally, the minister called on both Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to acknowledge the progress made and anticipate a brighter future for the country’s democracy. He conveyed his well wishes for a joyous celebration of Democracy Day.

It’s noteworthy that Nigeria historically celebrated Democracy Day on May 29, marking the transition from military rule to democracy in 1999. However, in 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari moved the celebration to June 12 in honor of Chief M.K.O Abiola, a champion of democracy.

This change was intended to commemorate a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, specifically highlighting the struggle for electoral freedom.

The 2024 Democracy Day marks the second celebration under President Tinubu’s administration, following his inauguration as Nigeria’s Commander-In-Chief on May 29, 2023.
