A helicopter in the convoy of Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi was involved in an accident on Sunday, state media reported, though it did not confirm if the president was on board.
State television reported, “Some unconfirmed reports say that the helicopter carrying President Raisi has had an accident in East Azerbaijan province,” and noted that rescue efforts were underway. It added that harsh weather conditions and heavy fog were making it difficult for rescue teams to reach the accident site.
Some local media sources indicated that Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and local officials were also on the same helicopter as Raisi.
President Raisi was in East Azerbaijan province to inaugurate a dam project with his Azeri counterpart, Ilham Aliev, on the border between the two countries. Raisi, 63, has been president of Iran since June 2021.
