President Bola Tinubu has affirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring fair wages and improved welfare for hardworking Nigerians. In his Workers’ Day message conveyed on May 1, 2024, through his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu commended Nigerian workers for their dedication to the nation’s peace, progress, and development.

Ngelale emphasized Tinubu’s recognition of the vital roles played by workers across various sectors, including clerical officers, security personnel, teachers, and doctors. Tinubu assured workers of his administration’s determination to enhance their welfare and improve working conditions, stating that workers deserve fair and commensurate wages.

Earlier, Tinubu announced salary increases ranging from 25% to 35% across different salary structures for civil servants, aiming to boost their welfare. However, the National Labour Congress (NLC) president, Joe Ajaero, criticized the increase, insisting that the federal government should implement a living wage of N615,000 to ensure workers’ well-being.

Ajaero stressed that a living wage should be sufficient to sustain workers without the need for borrowing or facing malnutrition. Tinubu’s administration remains committed to addressing workers’ concerns and improving their livelihoods.
