Former National Publicity Secretary of the now-defunct New Peoples Democratic Party (NPDP), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the escalating political tensions in Rivers State.
This appeal comes on the heels of fresh threats of impeachment against Governor Siminalayi Fubara by State Assembly members led by Marthin Amaewhule.
As an influential figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eze urged Tinubu to use his influence to urge the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, to rein in the actions of the legislators, whom he labeled as “the minister’s puppets.”
Eze stressed the importance of Tinubu stepping in to prevent what he described as a “looming collapse of democratic institutions,” citing concerns that the lawmakers were acting at the behest of the Minister.
Recent reports highlighted Governor Fubara’s public frustration with certain Local Government chairpersons in the state, whom he accused of showing him disrespect.
The strained relationship between Governor Fubara and the Federal Capital Territory Minister has been evident, with the governor alleging subversive actions by local government chairpersons aligned with the Minister.
During an event where he commissioned a Comprehensive Primary Healthcare Centre, Governor Fubara directly addressed Vincent Job, the Local Government Chairman of the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, warning of consequences for those who challenge his authority.
Amidst the escalating political turmoil between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, along with local government chairpersons and a majority of state assembly members siding with the Minister, Eze criticized the lawmakers’ move to threaten impeachment without concrete evidence of wrongdoing by the governor.
In a statement issued on Friday, Eze urged Governor Fubara to remain resolute in delivering on his promises to the people of Rivers State, advising him to ignore distractions from those seeking to undermine his administration’s efforts to provide good governance.
