Following weeks of grappling with the Cerebrospinal Meningitis outbreak, the Yobe State government has reported a significant reduction, with only 25 active cases remaining, according to Dr. Lawan Gana, the State Commissioner for Health.
Speaking at a World Health Day event organized by the World Health Organization in Damaturu, Abdullahi Danchuwa, representing Dr. Gana, acknowledged the collaborative efforts of organizations like WHO and UNICEF in combating the disease.
Dr. Gana expressed gratitude to Governor Mai Mala Buni for his substantial support towards healthcare initiatives aimed at addressing prevalent diseases in Yobe state. He reassured attendees that efforts were ongoing to combat cerebrospinal meningitis, with the latest figures indicating 25 cases across 10 local government areas.
Emmanuel Katugwa, a Surveillance Officer representing the State Coordinator of WHO, emphasized healthcare as a fundamental human right, echoing this year’s theme of “my health, my right.” He underscored the need for collective commitment to support governments in meeting the healthcare needs of their citizens.
The event included a road walk led by healthcare workers in Damaturu, sensitizing the public about the importance of accessing healthcare services.
