In a move reflecting the escalating tensions between Edo State’s top officials, the House of Assembly has voted to impeach Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
The decision was reached during a session on Monday morning, signaling a significant development in the power struggle between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Shaibu’s refusal to cooperate with the seven-member investigative panel, tasked with probing allegations against him, served as the catalyst for his removal. Despite multiple invitations, Shaibu failed to appear before the panel, prompting them to compile their report recommending his impeachment due to his perceived evasion of the opportunity to present a defense.
During a previous session on Friday, Justice S.A. Omonua (rtd), heading the panel, expressed disappointment at Shaibu’s absence, emphasizing the importance of his participation in the proceedings.
Legal proceedings surrounding Shaibu’s impeachment were further complicated by the withdrawal of his legal counsel, Professor Oladoyin Awoyale, SAN. Awoyale’s decision came after the panel rejected his motion, which sought compliance with a Federal High Court order calling for the maintenance of the status quo in the proceedings until a decision was reached on the matter.
